Meningiomas, the most common neuroepithelial tumors of the central nervous system (CNS), are typically seen in adults. In children they are relatively rare, representing 2% to 3% of all intracranial tumors. The authors reviewed the clinical data and the outcome of all children with histopathologically verified meningiomas who were treated at the authors’ institution in the last 20 years. The authors identified 186 patients who had been diagnosed with histopathologically verified meningiomas between 1988 and 2008. The majority of the cases (53%) were of the meningothelial meningioma subtype. At the last follow-up, median follow-up time was 66 months (range, 9-151 months). A total of 38 patients (20.4%) were treated primarily with surgery, whereas 148 patients (79.6%) were treated primarily with radiation therapy. The overall survival rate at 5 years was 95.5%. Overall survival and disease-free survival rates did not differ significantly between the patients who were treated with and those who were not treated with radiation therapy. This is the largest series of children with meningiomas reported to date. Meningiomas in children typically behave in a benign manner, with long-term survival after surgical removal. This invention relates generally to the field of liquid crystal electro-optic devices, and more particularly to addressing substrates for use therein.
2. Description of the Related Art
In electrowetting, the interfacial tension of a liquid is adjusted by an electric field. In the presence of an electric field, changes in the interfacial tension can be used to turn on and off the transmission of light through the liquid layer. The principle has been used in a variety of electro-optic devices, including displays, light modulators, and electrochromic displays. In conventional applications, the electric field is generated using two electrodes positioned on the top and bottom surfaces of the liquid layer. In this way, the electric field directed between the electrodes can be controlled to establish desirable functional states for transmission of light. This arrangement can be implemented in any liquid layer, but when the liquid layer is under the influence of gravity, the applied electric field can be used to modulate the position of the liquid layer, which in turn can be used to modulate the transmission of light through the liquid layer.
Conventional addressing schemes for electrowetting devices, for example, the architecture disclosed by U.S. Pat. No. 6,855,957, involve the use of two sets of electrodes, one set arranged on each of the top and bottom surfaces of the device.
